I approach individual psychotherapy as a collaboration in which we work together in a way that transforms pain and distress into healing and growth. I will help to support you in gaining personal insight, identifying obstacles, uncovering or rediscovering strengths. Although individual therapy is focused on your specific needs and goals, my approach uses themes of acceptance, self-compassion and our shared human experience to structure our work together. I feel it is important to develop a strong therapeutic alliance. Research has demonstrated that it is the relationship between the client and therapist that is of primary importance in facilitating positive meaningful change. I believe that this special relationship can change people profoundly; they can learn how to build greater emotional connection with self and others, and tap into deeper meaning. I may suggest appropriate homework such as books, reflections/meditations, or step by step personal projects to promote desired change. I truly believe Psychotherapy leads to a fuller integration of mind, body, and spirit, and strengthens our engagement in life.
Couples and romantic partners seek psychotherapy for many reasons and at many different stages of their lives, even when they are not experiencing any overt difficulties. Some seek the psychotherapy to strengthen their bond, relate with more ease or prepare for the next step in their lives together. Others come in crisis, uncertain of their futures, or whether resolution of their problems is even possible. My way of working helps enable couples to talk about the difficulties within the relationship, move through conflict and identify the negative patterns that they bring to the relationship, acknowledge these patterns, and work towards creating new and healthy patterns.
I also help enable couples to communicate more effectively, resolve conflict and make changes where needed in order to re-establish the trust and love required for intimacy and the relationship to flourish. Whether you are in a gender-diverse, heterosexual, same-sex or polyamorous relationship, psychotherapy can support you and your partner.
